The existence of a balanced coin in Russia in the second half of the XVIIth century (according to monastic documents)

Sedov P.V.

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the existence of weighted coins in Russia in the second half of the 17th century. Based on new archival data, the author comes to the conclusion, that during the second half of the 17th century the weight value of kopecks increased as their weight was lowered several times. When calculating large sums, the simultaneous circulation of coins of different weights led to their weighing and determination of value based on the value of the last mint. In smaller payments, the buyer could be given the opportunity to choose the coins that were most pro table for him, or their value could be the subject of bargaining. This practice testi es to the disorder of the monetary system of the 17th century, which was overcome as a result of the monetary reform of Peter I.

Polish printers’ devices as a subject of pseudoheraldry (in the context of European 16 th century printing)

Basov I.M.

Abstract

The author offers a look at the typology of printers' devices as an intermediate type of image between a coat of arms and a trademark. The formation of this printed book element, which appeared in the 15th century, was greatly in uenced by European medieval and, subsequently, Renaissance heraldry. However, several signi cant features distinguish devices from coats of arms: the lack of legal regulation, visual variability and inconstancy, optional usage, non-strict abidance to the formal rules of heraldry and purely commercial applying. In the latter feature, the publishing mark acts as a trademark intended for marketing purposes. At the same time, the functions that publishing marks inherited from coats of arms are revealed in the practice of their usage, and consist in verifying products and increasing the prestige of the printer. With the example of the Polish 16th century press, we can see different strategies for using signets: for veri cation, for continuity demonstration, for personal representation. In the context of Early Modern European print culture, the Polish printers' guild provides a representative example of how devices were associated with the social status of the entrepreneurs. In many cases, it played not a decorative role, but a symbolic one, providing the reader with information about the printing house or its owner.

“Miry places” (Ezekiel 47:11): a sermon by Cotton Mather in the Library of Congress manuscript collecti ons

Galtsin D.D.

Abstract

The unpublished sermon on the verse Ezekiel 47:11 (“But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt”) by the leading intellectual of early colonial New England / Massachusetts pastor Cotton Mather (1663-1728) of Boston, stored in the Library of Congress Manuscript Department is studied in respect of the time and circumstances of its composition. This sermon seems to have been overlooked by scholars of colonial New England. The text of the sermon, possibly written and peached in late 1700s, is represented in the incomplete form, as it is found in the manuscript. The text of the sermon is peculiar in respect of Mather’s treatment of Ezekiel in his literary corpus. The topic of the sermon bears very specific New England connotations: the lack of work of the Holy Spirit within an individual soul. This issue, so destructive to personal salvation, is here viewed as a communal problem, since the multitude of the unconverted create “Miry Places” that defile the City of God and the very river of Gospel grace that does not “heal” them. While in his “Biblia Americana” Mather interprets Ezekiel’s vision as describing the eschatological future, here he reads the prophet’s text as an allegory of actual spiritual experience of the community and deals with a “Mystical, & a Spiritual Meaning” of the verse.

Bayazitova G.I.

Abstract

The publication is a translation of an autograph kept in the National Library of Russia in the Department of Manuscripts, the collection of Peter Dubrovsky. The letter from the French Huguenot leader, Governor of Saumur, Philippe Du Plessis-Mornay to the Duke of Bouillon, was written in the period of the Rebellion of the Grandees led by the Prince of Condé and King Louis XIII and Regent Marie de Médicis' visit to Tours. The letter addresses the main events of this period: the Treaty of Saint-Menoux, the Reformed Churches National Synod in Tonneins, the election of the mayor of Poitiers, where Prince of Condé took an active part, the preparation of the General Assembly of French Calvinists and preparations for the General Estates of 1614. The author of the letter expresses concern about the state of French Calvinists, their involvement in the process of making political decisions, and their relations with the royal power. The publication shows complex relations within the Calvinist party, as well as ideological con icts among church representatives. One of Du Plessis-Mornay's motives for writing the letter is his wish that the Duke of Bouillon assists in the reconciliation of the famous preachers Daniel Tilenius and Pierre Du Moulinю
